DIY Project – Super Simple/Affordable Winter Coat Update

So, I’ve been searching for a new winter coat and have seen SO MANY beautiful options (check out this Art of Shopping video featuring Kimberly and I, and some of the gorgeous coats found at the Confederation Court Mall), but as a new car owner, I needed winter tires…so $600 went towards the tires, and I *very* reluctantly putting my dreams of a new coat aside for another season – and added it to my Christmas Wish List! – then I begrudgingly dug out last year’s coat from storage.

It’s ‘nice’. It’s ‘okay’. It’s BORING.

Since I absolutely could not live through the dull and dreary weather with a boring old coat, I had to come up with a stylish and cost-effective way to update my look.

Here’s the sad ‘before’ version…

Take note: there’s a button missing! This got me thinking…if I am going button shopping, I’m going to buy amazing buttons. Really beautiful buttons! And since the coat is already double-breasted, why not go for a brass, military-inspired look!

A visit to the Fabricville button section was an order! An easy $20 and my new coat is looking pretty awesome…

Here is the much happier result of being rebuttoned:

Please let me know what you’re doing to update your wintery look this year! Are you investing in a fantastic new coat like the ones in the Art of Shopping video? Perhaps a beautiful scarf or boots? Please – do tell!! I’d love to hear from you!

Autumn Cleaning is the new Spring Cleaning

Well, a shoeaholic I may be, but I’m getting hooked to organizing everything! I think it’s this nesting time of year when you want to make sure everything is the way you want it to be because you know that you’re going to be looking at for the next seven cold, long months.

So after tidying up my shoes, I moved on to my clothes. Starting with pulling pieces to donate (two and a half big bags! Yay!), then on to pulling pieces that I want to alter (some DIY projects to post this winter!), then finally on to hangers.

Yes, I said hangers.

Now, even though I have pulled all these items off of my clothes rack, I still have an abundant amount of delightful choices. And since I only have this closet in my whole house, I don’t separate my seasonal wardrobes, and space becomes an issue.

Getting back to the hangers – Dollorama has these great felt-covered hangers that keep your clothes from sliding off and making a mess. They’re sleek and narrow, so you can fit lots of clothes tidily. Anyways, I’ve been buying a few bundles of these over the last few months, and finally picked up the second-last bundle needed to get all garments on uniform hangers this past weekend. And I’m too impatient to wait to post this until I get them all, ha!

I wish I took a ‘before’ picture!! But I forgot. So use your imaginations! It was sloppy…

Here’s the wonderful ‘almost’ finished product!

Shoe-aholic!

Hi, my name is Savannah. And I’m a shoe-aholic….

I think it’s because my feet are a lovely little size 5.5, and I can fit into all the beautiful vintage pumps and funky 70s boots. But it does seem that my taste in footwear is becoming more and more refined – steering away from the thrift and vintage shops finds and heading towards that gorgeous new Michael Kors peep-toe heel or that Guess platform sandal…

But my anorexic wallet and dripped-dry bank account aren’t the only issues. What about closet space?!?!

You’ll often see in magazines or on TV that super stars like Mariah Carey and Oprah have these immaculate closets that are colour coded and extremely organized. Or my dream closet? Cher’s on Clueless with the computerized version of herself to dress up them the ‘closet’ sorts out the ensemble for you.

So anyways…without a billion dollars, I had to get my thinking cap on…This is what I had to work with:

And that’s not even all of them…

…but here’s what I did!

1. Went to a local department store and bought a lot of pretty boxes!!

2. Painstakingly took photos of each pair of shoes…ugh.

3. Printed off photos of each of the shoes, cut them into small pics and taped them to the pretty boxes. I recommend taping the photos instead of gluing, in case you ever want to get rid of a pair (gasp!) or move them into a different box. *However, as you can see in the photo below, the humid PEI air has curled the paper a bit, so keep that in mind when you’re fastening the pics.

4. And voila! We’ve got a very simple way to find the right shoes for an outfit, and keep them clean and tidy!

Happy sorting!! =)

DIY Project – Mission: ECMA Pop Star

DIY Project #3 – Elaborately Embellished Dress Pants

What you’ll need:
– pants
– material that matches in colour to the pant
– 3 types of ribbon
– thread & needle

These embellishments are sewn mostly the same as DIY project #2, with a few minor adjustments.

(Sorry this photo is blurry!)

Step #1: Cut the ribbons and trim two-to-three inches longer than length of pant leg. If the ribbon you’re using is prone to fraying and unravelling, use the flame from a lighter or a match to carefully melt the raw ends of the ribbon.

Step #2: Cut two strips of the material to the same length of the ribbons and trim, and the same width as the trim put together plus one inch.

Step #3: Stitch the ribbon to the strips. If you are using cord like in the photo, sew this one first then layer the others on afterwards.

Step #4: Pin the strip to the pants as straight as possible along the side seam. Turn the extra inch-long ends of the ribbon under the bottom hem of the pant and at the waist line allowing some leeway for a belt loop.

Step #5: Stitch the strip to the pant from under the belt line to the bottom hem as close to the edges of the strip as possible to give a clean finish. Hand-stitch the top of the strip to the inside of the waistline leaving space for a belt to fit through.
